Big Tree Loop #6

Trails and Parks on Cormorant Island

Only 4 kilometres long and roughly 1 kilometre across at the narrowest point, Cormorant Island still boasts over 10.5 kilometres of both hiking and biking trails.

The Big Tree Loop Trail, Alert Bay Ecological Park, a children's park built by the Lion's Club and an extensive hiking/biking trail are all available on Cormorant Island. There is a picnic area with a horseshoe pitch adjacent to the entrance to the trail system which provides a pleasant spot for a relaxing day enjoying the view from the top of the island, bird-watching and exploring.

Part of the trail network, the Big Tree Loop is an interpretive path with fifteen numbered stations. A guidebook with a map is available, supplying information on the general habitat and some of the species you will encounter.

The trails are maintained by enthusiatic volunteers and a project is underway to provide signs and information on all the major trails.
