Alert Bay Public Library & Museum

The Alert Bay Public Library and Museum first opened its doors on February 21, 1959. It is located in a historical building located on the waterfront.  Adjacent to the Info Centre, this building once housed the fire hall and municipal office.

The Library has over 6700 books for borrowing and is part of the OUTLOOK program which helps us to borrow from other public libraries in the Province. Our circulation is about 3500 books borrowed every year.  Our library membership is 331 which consists of residents of Cormorant Island from both the Incorporated Village of Alert Bay and the Native Reserve. The membership is free to anyone living on Cormorant Island.

Our Archives has over 6000 photographs catalogued and available for viewing by the public. They are in the process of being transferred to a digital format for easier viewing. the archives also include a collection of newspapers published in Alert Bay from 1939-1941, 1951 - 1964 and the more recent North Island Gazette.
